Distressed Thai Painting of Temple Dancer and Buddhist Monkey God, c. 1950

Distressed Thai Painting of Temple Dancer and Buddhist Monkey God, c. 1950

$1,800.00Price

Antique Thai painting depicting an Aspara or dancing nymph in the forest with perhaps Hanuman, The Monkey God, recognized in both Hindu and Buddhist religions for his strength and extraordinary feats. Oil on board painting may date back to the late 19th century, however the custom frame is most likely from the 1940's or 1950's. The painting itself is heavily distressed most likely from the effects of extreme weather and temperatures, but still adding to the allure and beauty of this vintage piece. It's difficult to identify the depictions and the story of this painting, but it is most likely religious in nature. Framed in a walnut wood shadow box frame with silk borders in teal and with gold leaf accents. Stunning colors are still visible including the gold leaf on the dancer's ornamental headdress, necklace, and waistband. The painting features a mossy green forest against a blue sky. In the lower right hand corner is what I believe to be Hanuman, the Monkey God in faded blue, as he is often depicted with blueish skin.
